Day 2 – Cap-Haitian, Nord Haiti
After a restful sleep, I got up at 6am to prepare for a 7am
breakfast. We had scrambled eggs, toast and juice. It was nice to have another
meal with my teammates and new family. At 8am we left for our 1st
day of work. We were greeted by a school engineer. Others who came in as we
gathered in the sanctuary were the principle, teacher, custodian and others. We
sang How Great Thou Art and prayed before starting to work. We joined the
Haitian men who were hard at work. Some of the work we did was to clear planks
of woods by removing old nails. All good nails were straightened for reuse. Some
experienced their 1st time using a circular electric saw. Others cut
wires or helped build the wood frame to be used for the cement pillars. We had
a wonderful meal that was served by the Pastor’s wife and other women. As we
went back to work the team grew in unity. Not just the working part but the
caring for one another. Some shared time
and laughter with the students. You
could see and hear the politeness of the students. Working side by side with
the Haitians allowed us to show care and love to a country that was working
hard to rebuild. We were glad to be working and showing God’s love to the
people of Haiti. As we returned home for a little free time before supper, some
of us sat on the balcony and heard wonderful singing from a building close by.
Lynne found out that the mothers and it must have been some fathers met every
evening to sing. It sounded so nice. It
was a relaxing way to end the day. Even though I did not know the words I
pictured words of blessing for another day of life and thankfulness for all we
have. God is teaching me to be still and here the leading of the Holy Spirit
and to be at peace.
