WOW!! What a day! I cannot describe how Haiti is blessing
us. Our hosts are treating us like royalty. They are very gracious and take wonderful care
of us. This morning we worshiped at First Baptist Church of Cap Haitian. Of course the service was in Haitian Creole
and even though we were not sure what they were saying, the Holy Spirit was alive and well. They put
us in the front row and introduced us. Gary gave the message and did a fabulous
job. He received several positive responses. He looked very calm and shared
from his heart. He spoke through an
interpreter. The congregation was very
welcoming and greeted us on the way out.
Our mode of transportation to church was the back of a
pick-up. The ladies were in dresses and the guys were in shirts and ties.
Imagine with me; a short bed pick up with 10 white people in
dress clothes swerving in and out of traffic. LOL We definitely drew attention.
Swerving around motorcycles carrying up to 5 people on them, people pushing
wheelbarrows filled with freshly butchered pigs headed to market, merchandise
stands set up on sidewalks, the open sewer along the edge of the road.,
vehicles with people in and on them. The
sounds of horns honking, people communicating, traffic. There seems to be a lot
of people on the street at all times. There is one traffic light in Cap Haitian
(a city of 190,000). No stop signs, no lines on the road, vehicles passing on
right and left. It was sensory overload and I really felt the ambiance of
Haiti. What a blast!
This afternoon we were treated to a trip to Du Croix. Du
Croix is a camp on the ocean shore that FBC Cap Haitian is working on. There
are old buildings that were abandoned. The plan is to fix it up and use it as a
camp for kids and for Pastors and meetings. It is located in a setting that is
like paradise, the ocean, the beach, the mountains. It is beautiful! Last year
the group that came put a roof on the main building. FBC Cadillac folks and
others donated money to work on the dormitories and a latrine. The dormitories
are progressing and the latrine is looking good.
We went in a van this time, which is good because the road
went over a mountain. It was narrow and had some washout. God protected us all
the way. We had 17people in an 11 passenger van. BUT, it had air conditioning! WOO HOO! That
was a treat. It is hot here and never cools.
After our evening meal we went outside to try out the jump
ropes that we will use in Vacation Bible School tomorrow. The children from the
house and some of the workers here came out too. We had so much fun and
laughter as we practiced jumping rope with them. Even though there is a
communication barrier, we had a great time with them. The children then helped
us translate some VBS songs into Creole for tomorrow. They stayed with us for
devotions. Friendships are forming here!!
I appreciate the whole team as we adapt and prepare for
Vacation Bible School tomorrow. I just mention something that needs to be done
and someone does it. What a group! Love them all!
So pray for us for VBS. We planned for 3 days and we will be
doing 4 days so adjustments are being done. God is very visible here and I am
having an adventure of a lifetime!
