Puerto Rico
The team found out that the Hattian time we were preparing for wasn’t observed in Puerto Rico. Instead of waking leisurely, we were up and getting ready for breakfast that was served at 7:00am sharp. We ate well with scrambled eggs, ham, bread, and the best oatmeal most of us have ever had. Than we traveled to Centro de Envejecientes Carolina (The Senior Center of Carolina) where we exercised with senior citizens and then played games with them. Dr. Dolly Tittle was obliviated by a very nice lady in the labyrinth marble game. Pastor Matt Hall was also beaten in the game, but by the very skilled and talented Morgan Madej. Our team was excited to meet Ellma who spoke English very well because she had lived in New York. We also met a nice lady who’s son now lives in Oshkosh WI. She said she had visited in the winter once and did not seem excited to return. We had a cultural lesson at the center that we discussed latter in the day. It seems it is very common for people In Puerto Rico to be very rude to one another. After discussing this we found out that Puerto Ricans would not consider this to be rude, they would consider Michiganders to be sensitive. Beyond the name calling and nagging (after all we were involved in the sport of games) I think it is important to note that most of the time people from both sides teams would clap if someone scored a point. We had a very nice time visiting and many of the people there thanked us for coming.
Later in the day we traveled to a store that specialized in “limber” which is a frozen treat. They also put a bible verse on each one of their cups encouraging customers to look it up later in the day. We than traveled to the Girasolero Garden owned by Eric. (Who also teaches Salsa Dance lessons) The garden was built on the former sight of what we would consider a junk yard. We ate lunch at the garden, Beef Tips with Beans and Rice. After lunch we put a new “pastico” tarp on one of the greenhouses. We also moved a large pile of dirt. We had the opportunity to interact with Eric and his crew while Kaylie and Morgan got some first-hand Spanish lessons. Renee got to attach boards to the greenhouse with a power driver, but most of the crew from Michigan was a little short to do a lot of the fastening work. For this job they were very happy to have the “Alto Yankee” to help.
Nicky and Lizzy (our chuffer and Guides) continued to show us around. We had chicken and mashed potatoes for dinner. Followed by a tour around 8:00pm that also included Gelato. After a Devotional on Isiah 42:16 and a lot of discussion we ended our day with “Here I Am To Worship” and a prayer. Our group continues to grow as a team and it is apparent that God is in our midst. We continue to pray for our time here and for the Hattian team.
