Tap-Tap Ride and Soccer

January 17, 2014
Day 5 – Cap-Haitian, Nord Haiti

What a great mission so far.  The team has really grown close and we work together well.  We have also been working and learning from the Haitian workers also.  I was so happy to recognize one of the roofers from the Du Croix mission.  His name is Wesley and after that mission ended, I gave him my huge, crazy reflective sunglasses.  It has been awesome working with him; he has been so encouraging to everyone.

Our worship and devotions have been wonderful and thought provoking.  Each one has been different but they all kind of correlate together.   I, especially, considered the devotion on love that Kim gave us, later into the night in my prayers.

Thursday evening, we asked Jackencie to play soccer.  She only had a deflated ball, so Steve and Chris agreed to take Hayley, Adam, Sam, Mikay, Maddie, Taylor and myself to find a place to pump it up.  We walked quite a while before we found a mechanic with an air compressor and a needle for the ball.  We then walked a little farther down the street to where Cap-Haitien students like to hang out.  It is a monument that commemorates the country’s freedom.  As we were walking there, I asked Steve how much a Tap-Tap ride might be.  He said it would be $1 Haitian to ride, so I paid for us to have our first Tap-Tap ride.  It was sweet. The music was blaring; we were crammed in; the Haitians in the Tap-Tap looked affronted that some Blancs were with them.  It was great.  We hope to get the whole team on two Tap-Taps Sunday for an unexpected opportunity.

After we got back, we hit the street and played some soccer.  It was really fun and exhausting, after an already exhausting day.  We persuaded a little boy to play with us and he was so good.  We all had a great time.

These missions are so rewarding on so many levels, but I do miss my family.  The internet service is pretty sketchy, which is why the blogs haven’t always been up, so communicating with home has been difficult.  Facebook messaging is a blessing, but not the same as seeing the faces of loved one’s, especially my little baby boy.  I will be very sad to leave on Sunday night but happy to home Monday evening.
