My Observations
My first observation of Haiti was the airport: extreme
chaos. Bag boys would flood you and wrestle you to take care of your bags for a
dollar. Then there was the sitting outside of the airport, where you’d hurry up
to wait- definitely an interesting experience. The ride to Port-au-Price, a
city maybe made for a half million people was crammed with two million people.
Arriving at our compound, it’s like you’re taking in an oasis in the middle of
chaos. I was very taken aback. You really begin to examine yourself as far as
your personal wants and needs, seeing true poverty. I find myself guilty for
taking our clean drinking water out of the compound, and we sometimes try to
give it away to the locals when we can. I think the whole team felt an
accomplishment after building the four walls of the rubble house after four
days. It was a good feeling. Our Cap-Haitian friends are here being missionaries
to their own people. They took the time out of their week to come here and help
like we did. It was pretty cool to see.
